The truck was stolen in\u00a0the town of\u00a0Cardenas, Tabasco, on\u00a0Monday. The authorities issued an alert for\u00a0the state, where the incident took place, as\u00a0well as\u00a0Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca and Veracruz. Locals are advised not to\u00a0touch the radioactive material, establish a 30-meter (32-yard) security perimeter around\u00a0the container and inform the authorities.<\/p>\n

Such incidents are not uncommon in\u00a0Mexico. In February, the authorities recovered three trucks with\u00a0iridium-192 shortly after\u00a0they were stolen in\u00a0the city of\u00a0Salamanca, Guanajuato state.<\/p>\n

In July 2014, a truck transporting Iridium-192 was stolen in\u00a0the suburb of\u00a0Mexico City. Mexican authorities later found it abandoned not far from\u00a0the place it was taken. Several months earlier, thieves stole a pickup carrying Cobalt-60, a material that could be used to\u00a0produce a “dirty bomb”, according to\u00a0the IAEA, UN\u2019s nuclear watchdog.<\/p>\n
